Clean Up Completed At Middle Falls Paper
Mill
A clean up at a former paper mill in Middle
Falls has been completed by the Environmental Protection Agency this week. The
former Stevens and Thompson Paper Company in Middle Falls contained asbestos
insulation as well as other types of chemical waste and debris.
The Environmental Protection Agency worked
to clear gallons of chemical waste as well as the asbestos insulation as part of
the clean up. The local and state government asked agency officials to start a
clean up at the site last September, and work commenced immediately. The work
was completed earlier this week.
Liquid and solid chemicals were returned to
suppliers, recycled, or disposed of as part of the clean up. The regional
administrator for the EPA stated that immediate action was taken upon request to
deal with the clean up at the abandoned site.
It is estimated that the total cost of the
clean up at the paper mill came to almost three hundred and fifty thousand
dollars. The paper company had been in operation since the late 1800s and ceased
trading in 2001.
